A bucket elevator moves grain, powder and granular products vertically, lifting material from floor level to the higher feed points of a production line. Kasas Teknoloji manufactures bucket elevator units for food and packaging plants, sizing the casing height, bucket volume and inlet positions around the existing layout of each facility. The casing is produced in stainless steel or painted carbon steel, while buckets and belts in contact with the product are specified in food-grade materials for hygienic handling. Compared with long inclined conveyors, the enclosed vertical design occupies a small footprint and keeps the line flow uninterrupted. Capacity, lift height and product characteristics are evaluated together, and each unit is engineered for its own plant. Ice packaging lines feeding vertical baggers use dedicated bucket arrangements.

How It Works

A bucket elevator is built around an endless belt or chain carrying buckets at fixed intervals. Product enters through the inlet at the boot section, where the rising buckets scoop it up and carry it inside the enclosed casing. At the head section the drive pulley turns the buckets over and directs the product toward the discharge spout. The discharge method follows the behaviour of the material: free-flowing grain is thrown out centrifugally at higher speed, while fragile or sticky products are discharged more gently at reduced speed. Chain-driven designs suit heavier and more abrasive materials, whereas belt-driven designs run quieter and with less vibration. A take-up assembly in the boot maintains belt or chain tension so that slipping and bucket misalignment are avoided. Because the return run is enclosed, dust escape is limited and product loss inside the plant is reduced. Inspection doors allow buckets and belts to be replaced without dismantling the casing.

What is a bucket elevator?

How does a bucket elevator work?

Which products can a bucket elevator handle?

Most dry granular, powdered and free-flowing materials can be handled. Typical duties include cereals and grain, pulses, sugar, flour, nuts, granular plastics and ice. Particle size, moisture content, flowability and abrasiveness all affect bucket type, bucket spacing and belt speed, so these properties are reviewed together during the design stage of each project.

How is bucket material selected?

Bucket selection follows the properties of the conveyed material. Food-grade plastic or stainless steel buckets are used for food products, while thicker metal buckets suit abrasive and heavy materials. Bucket depth and lip profile are chosen according to how freely the product flows. Wide-mouth profiles that ease discharge are preferred for moist or sticky products.

How are lift height and capacity determined?

Lift height is taken from the difference between the pick-up level and the inlet level of the machine being fed. Capacity is calculated from the hourly product requirement, the bulk density of the material and the daily running time of the line.
